Do you like math? Would you like to know how to compute your site’s pagerank? David Austin tells it how its done.

How Google Finds Your Needle in the Web’s Haystack

As we’ll see, the trick is to ask the web itself to rank the importance of pages…

Imagine a library containing 25 billion documents but with no centralized organization and no librarians. In addition, anyone may add a document at any time without telling anyone. You may feel sure that one of the documents contained in the collection has a piece of information that is vitally important to you, and, being impatient like most of us, you’d like to find it in a matter of seconds. How would you go about doing it?

Posed in this way, the problem seems impossible. Yet this description is not too different from the World Wide Web, a huge, highly-disorganized collection of documents in many different formats. Of course, we’re all familiar with search engines (perhaps you found this article using one) so we know that there is a solution. This article will describe Google’s PageRank algorithm and how it returns pages from the web’s collection of 25 billion documents that match search criteria so well that “google” has become a widely used verb.

Most search engines, including Google, continually run an army of computer programs that retrieve pages from the web, index the words in each document, and store this information in an efficient format. Each time a user asks for a web search using a search phrase, such as “search engine,” the search engine determines all the pages on the web that contains the words in the search phrase. (Perhaps additional information such as the distance between the words “search” and “engine” will be noted as well.) Here is the problem: Google now claims to index 25 billion pages. Roughly 95% of the text in web pages is composed from a mere 10,000 words. This means that, for most searches, there will be a huge number of pages containing the words in the search phrase. What is needed is a means of ranking the importance of the pages that fit the search criteria so that the pages can be sorted with the most important pages at the top of the list.

One way to determine the importance of pages is to use a human-generated ranking. For instance, you may have seen pages that consist mainly of a large number of links to other resources in a particular area of interest. Assuming the person maintaining this page is reliable, the pages referenced are likely to be useful. Of course, the list may quickly fall out of date, and the person maintaining the list may miss some important pages, either unintentionally or as a result of an unstated bias.

Google’s PageRank algorithm assesses the importance of web pages without human evaluation of the content. In fact, Google feels that the value of its service is largely in its ability to provide unbiased results to search queries; Google claims, “the heart of our software is PageRank.” As we’ll see, the trick is to ask the web itself to rank the importance of pages.

A blog post by Matt Cutts at blogger.com would be hitting its first year anniversary this coming December 1. And yet the comment section is still on fire. If you got some free time, go and grab a coffee and digest all of its juicy information about buying and selling links that pass PageRank.

I’ve quoted some of it here for easy digestion.

Not all paid links are bad. You can not group all paid links under one banner. A Webmaster has

every right to charge for a link when there is a competitive market to get a link on that page.

What you fail to understand is that there are just no opportunities for small Webmasters to get attention.

This is especially true of commercial sites. Occasionally a information or trivia site might make

the Digg Homepage - but few people are going to help small Webmasters unless there is something in it for them.

Not all Webmasters can even THINK of competing with large organization who spend MILLIONS as if it was water.

The concern is not whether a links is paid but whether it is relevant.

You have an obligation to help the small Webmaster if you are going to insist that they not use paid links.

What other option are you giving them. Are they to just die and wither away.

I’m confused. Adsense pays me for links on my site. So those are paid links. Am I going to lose PR for using adsense?

I’m new at all this so sorry if that’s a stupid question. Trying to figure out which paid links are the bad ones.

What about web designers that have a portfolio of their clients? We all link to our clients… is

Pagerank and me has gone online almost the same time, t’was during the late 90’s. You can check Pagerank history here. Initially, I just browse, chat, email and a litle bit WYSIWYG web design on Yahoo Geocities. Thanks to Yahoo that site of mine is still up and running up to this date. Ok back to PR. I’ve started blogging 2 years ago and only last year that I have took absolute notice of pagerank, when webmasters and bloggers talked about it blatantly online. You could see a lot of webpages and blog posts about it.

That’s the time I got curious about it and checked my own on checkpagerank. Hey, I got a PR3. Was it great? Maybe, I still don’t know. From a ranking of 0 to 10, maybe its not, but it’s better than zero haha. I guess I have to thank Google for grading my site even though it was unsolicited.

Without paying much attention to it, I just continue blogging, and blogging, and blogging. The next time I’ve checked my PR was on prchecker, I’ve heard its more reliable. From then on I knew that having a higher pagerank means big deal (and big bucks too, maybe that’s why its colored green, lol) for us webmasters. The result was amazing! I got a PR4 rank. Yipee!

Then the tsunamis of PR updates came to town. A lot of websites PR has been washed away. Yes your right! My site was one them. Damn! I got a zero pagerank. Imagine coming from a PR4, its totally uncool for Google to do that! Similar to An Act of God? No warnings whatsoever? Just because they created it, they can took it back just like that? Its like you’ve been thrown out of a tall building with a Google brand chute that failed to open! 100% dead! It was that time googlepageranksucks was born out of my tantrums.

The show must go on. With or without a pagerank I continue with my blog. Adjusting and dropping some of my money-making links and other stuff hoping to get my PR back. In two months time Google gave it back, only half, but then again its better than zero. At least I have recovered it partially (my PR and my ill-feelings haha).

As Im writing this primary post on this site. The site I was referring to plummeted again to PR0. I just knew it from an online friend, because I already removed the pagerank toolbar on my browser. A lot of harebrained ideas to why did it happened again is a mystery to me and to many with the same situation, I guess. Instead of this unlovable move, I think Google for a fact should care for the webmasters, for without us there wouldn’t be any content to search on the internet. And Google Search Engine or any other Search Engine would just extinct and fades away in oblivion.

How bout you, What’s your pagerank story?
